PROLOGUE/CHAPTER TWO

Description: Entrance of the Aliens into the Andreasson household

The lights went out in the house, and there was a pink light shining through the kitchen window, that got brighter, became reddish-orange and glowed, pulsated. Stillness all around. Betty Andreasson's father, Waino Aho, later described having then seen creatures "like Halloween freaks" through the window. They jumped one after another. There were four of them, and they came through the kitchen door "like follow-the-leader."

[1] The rock group PINK FLOYD took their name from the first names of blues musicians Pink Anderson (*) and Floyd Council. However, group member Syd Barrett also claimed that the name for the group had been passed on to him by the occupants of a flying saucer. There could, conceivably, be an allusion in the name Pink Floyd to the pink alien light witnessed at this stage of Betanex, or to a later feature of the encounter (see Part 4). (* The name 'Anderson' might well be genealogically linked to the name 'Andreasson')

[3] JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE 1967 LP 'Axis Bold As Love.'

"I just thought about the title. There might be a meaning behind the whole thing. The Axis of the earth turns around and changes the face of the world and completely different civilisations come about or another age comes about." (Jimi Hendrix)

[1+] U.K. hit single release by FUZZBOX entitled 'Pink Sunshine.'

[2+] There are four songs by SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES that could be connected to this early phase of Betanex: 'Suburban Relapse' (kitchen setting for a "relapse"); 'Happy House' ("I'm walking through your window"); 'There's A Planet In My Kitchen,' and 'Halloween.'

"Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide. No escape from reality..."

Description: The Aliens' appearance

The beings had grey skins, and their faces appeared mongoloid. Large cat-like eyes. Uniforms worn by aliens are dark blue, with a blue diagonal band across chest, and on one sleeve an emblem resembling a bird. Betty Andreasson's daughter, Becky, later compared one of the creatures to "..a clay man.. they look like clay..."

Connections

[2+] SALVADOR DALI, in 1959, wore a spacesuit-like costume, with a bird emblem on the torso, similar to the one on these aliens' sleeve. See photo section between pages 190 and 191 in Meryle Secrest 'Salvador Dali: The Surrealist Jester' for complete photograph. Here's the emblem:

In 1959, ENRICO BAJ published the fourth and last issue of Il Gesto, a magazine he'd founded four years earlier with Sergio Dangelo and Edouard Jaguer. This edition was largely devoted to 'Interplanetary Art.' Also, in 1959, Baj commenced work on his 'Generals' pictures, which continued over many years. A large number of these featured figures with a band or sash diagonally positioned as with the aliens at the start of Betanex (Figs.3-5). Some also sport an emblem of a bird, somewhat varying in their similarity to the emblem depicted in Fig. 5 Thandra. One example is:

[3+] 'Sir Marmeduke Constable, Lord of Flamborough' (colour etching, 1965, Ed.50) - this is a male figure with long nose, hair on head etc. Hand depicted as Fig.5 Thandra, though five digits. Bird emblem is virtually the same (!), positioned near top of sash, rather than on arm.

[3] The clothing worn by the aliens resemble the costumes of the PUPPETS IN THE TV SERIES THUNDERBIRDS, and colour-wise, especially the puppet of SCOTT TRACY - see front cover of this character on one of the alternate covers of Radio Times, 2-8 September 2000.

[3] The line "pretty little policemen in a row," and the "Eggman"/"Eggmen" identified in
THE BEATLES 'I Am The Walrus' may be inspired by the appearance of these creatures,
who are small in height, have oversize hairless heads, and wear dark blue uniforms.

The Beatles lyrics

Article UFOs:What Are They? states that the majority of alien abductees report
'a large egg-shaped head.'

[3] On January 14th 1973, ELVIS PRESLEY performed a concert at the Honolulu International Center Arena, which would eventually be seen on television in around 40 different countries under the title 'Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite.' It was, reportedly, watched by more Americans than Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon. For this historic concert Elvis chose to wear a jumpsuit sporting representations of a bird with downturned wings - including on the arms - this is consistent with the arm emblem worn by the aliens encountered six years previously by Betty Andreasson.

[2] Of possible relevance to the creatures' appearance is the DEVO song 'Mongoloid.'

[2] Scratched into the run-out groove of a 12" single by SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES is the message: 'The cat with the x-ray eyes.'

[2] MICHAEL JACKSON has been photographed on at least three occasions wearing clothing with a diagonal band across the chest. For three examples click here.

[1+] In a 1989 Smash Hits magazine article, it was revealed concerning MADONNA that: 'Quite fascinatingly, she is known to use china clay in her make-up...'

[2+] Cover picture of KATE BUSH 1989 LP 'The Sensual World.' Compare to face-on photograph of 'Quazgaa' bust, created by Fred R.Youngren and his daughter Faith, in photo section of Thandra. (Comparison to another model of the alien head below).

[1] LEONARDO DI CAPRIO and the CAST OF THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK '..attending the film's Paris premiere last week, where Leonardo was presented with a muskateer-style sash and toasted his recent box-office feats...' Page 8 of Hello!, 28.3.98, photograph shows Leonardo and another cast member wearing a blue-coloured sash.

Description: The creatures give Betty Andreasson a blue book, and she observes their changing eyes

A small, bright and blue book is given to Betty. She looks through it, then closes it, and the entities' eyes look at her. As she describes in Thandra: "And their eyes are so funny. One minute they are light, and now they've got a black ball in it. And they move straight, especially that left eye.." - this seems quite redolent of someone describing a kaleidoscope.

Connections

[2] In THE BEATLES 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,' there is "..the girl with kaleidoscope eyes."

The Beatles lyrics

[2] The lyric "..Perhaps the strange ones in the dome could lend us a book, we could read up alone," in the DAVID BOWIE song 'Drive In Saturday' could possibly connect with the offering of the small blue book to Betty Andreasson. There are also enigmatic book references in 'Oh! You Pretty Things' and 'The Bewlay Brothers.'

[1+] The third SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES LP was entitled 'Kaleidoscope.'
