A SELECTION OF QUOTES FROM GLOBE IN TRANSIT BULLETINS 1989-1993

JIMI HENDRIX

"It's just like a spaceship. If a spaceship came down, if you know nothin' about it, the first thing you're goin' to think about is shootin' it. In other words, you get negative in the first place already, which is not really the natural way of thinking. But there's so many tight-lipped ideas and laws around, and people put themselves in uniform so tightly, that it's almost impossible to break out of that. Subconsciously what all these people are doing, they're killin' off all these little flashes they have. Like if I told you about a certain dream that was all freaked out, and you'll say, "Oh, wow, you know where is this at?" That's because you're cuttin' off the idea of wantin' to understand what's in there. You don't have the patience to get into this"

STAN RIDGWAY

"Y'know, if I wasn't doing this showbusiness thing, I think I'd probably be investigating the abduction phenomenon… all these cases of ordinary folk claiming to have been carried off by aliens, taken to UFOs, and subjected to tests to examine their physical and mental capabilities. I guess it might be more interesting than showbusiness. You've got to be obsessed to stick in showbusiness…" (Record Mirror, 1989)

ROBERT PALMER

"I live in the shadow of the future" (UK TV, June 1989)

THE BANGLES

Susanna Hoffs: "I want to believe in religion"

Michael Steele: "But maybe we're just being controlled from outer space by aliens"

Debbi Peterson: "Our dad once saw a UFO in the desert in the fifties. He's very conservative and didn't tell anyone for years, he was so scared. It couldn't have been anything else because 'Star Trek' hadn't yet put ideas into people's heads, and at that time there were no military aircraft that could suddenly fly sideways at fantastic speed, stop dead instantly, then suddenly move off in another direction at the same supersonic speed"

Vicki Peterson: "There must also have been something to do with extraterrestrials or God at his house. There was a light that kept coming on, even though it wasn't touched, and electricians tested it"

Michael Steele: "Oh no, maybe the Lord is an alien" (Record Mirror, July 1989)

S'EXPRESS

"When I was young, I honestly thought I was the link between mankind and an alien race. I thought that, one day, they'd come and pick me up, and teach me the cures for cancer, wars and so on. I've always felt myself to be a special person. I think I'm definitely on Earth for a purpose. Many special people feel like that, and rightly so. Definitely, fate has been mapped out. There's something watching over us" (Mark Moore, July 1989)

X-RAY SPEX

"It was in Doncaster after a gig, and I'd been smoking and reading lots of funny things and I hadn't ate or slept for days. Suddenly I started seeing all these terrible things… I must have been hallucinating but I thought I really saw it because I don't think just smoking could do that to you… It was much stronger than an LSD trip or anything! You know it couldn't REALLY have happened but it was so real you can't just dismiss it. I just looked out the window into the dark and I swear I saw it. It sounds stupid and you can't tell anyone… but it was a horrible big pink thing, a spacecraft, making a load of noise, and when it left there was smoke and stuff. But no one else saw it so it couldn't have been real. At the time I was terrified. I was wearing all that bright gear, and to see that big pink thing just come flying at me… I thought it was my fault for dressing up. And all my songs kept coming back to me as it happened. Day-glow bionic men and stuff. I was petrified, I thought it would get me…" (Poly Styrene, October 1978)

MICHAEL JACKSON

"I've seen illusions in the air that man has never seen. We went over the North Pole and it was total dark, and you saw these big icebergs that were glowing in the night. And then I looked far out into the sky and saw purple, green and blue crystals sparkling and turning in the air. I said, 'What is that?', and the pilot said he didn't know, they'd only seen that once before. I said, 'My God, I'll never forget this.'" (Melody Maker, 1980)

URI GELLER

"I'm a great believer in Extraterrestrial intelligence" (UK TV, May 1990)

NINA HAGEN

"..it's called 'New Age' - in the Bible they say Zion.. and the UFOs are talking about that today - when UFOs come in my dream and I see, they say 'We want to get in contact with you now.' And, um.. I know that one day there will a miracle happen…" (French TV, 1983)

TOYAH WILLCOX

"..As wacky as ever, Toyah says she can only sleep when her husband, King Crimson founder Robert Fripp is in town. When he is not, she heads for the hills and has taken up UFO watching. "Last summer I spent almost every night in the hills," she said.." (The People, March 1991)

JULIAN MCMAHON

"..some aliens did land in my back yard once. They abducted me for a little while, but they brought me back and I felt quite normal. I can't remember what it was like, it was one of those experiences you can't remember, but I'm thinking of going into therapy to try and withdraw it" (TV Hits, June 1991)

THE PIXIES

"I physically was at a very real UFO incident, but I was too young to remember anything about it. It's only been recounted to me. But that's pretty intriguing. And it's pretty weird that… I was reading some UFO magazine a few months ago about this Peruvian guy who had some big UFO organisation down in South America, and he refers to the UFOs, the ships, as manta rays. And I've written two songs using manta rays as an image for UFOs, and I'd never read that before. Then I was reading one of those goofball books about Area 51, the airforce base in Nevada where they supposedly have the alien bodies and ships on ice. I read in this book that it's known in UFO circles as The Ranch, and I've got this song called 'The Happening' where the opening line goes "They got a ranch they call number 51," and I'd never heard of this place referred to as The Ranch. I know they're stoopid coincidences that don't really amount to a lot, but a grin can't help but crawl across your face. It's kind of fun to think 'Well, gee! They're f---in' with my mind, man!' I know! Down deep, subconsciously, I know!" (Black Francis, October 1991)

SHARON STONE

"MOVIE star Sharon Stone's parents thought she was an 'alien.' The blonde beauty, who shot to fame in Basic Instinct, was a shy bookworm in her youth who was misunderstood by both family and friends. "I was a bit of a nerd as a child. I was afraid of dating and was the classic misfit," says the 35-year-old. "Everyone thought I was strange. Sometimes they joked I was from another planet, and Dad was among those who thought I was an alien."" (Daily Mirror, July 1993)

SHIRLEY MACLAINE

"DOTTY Shirley Maclaine cancelled a flight home to Hollywood from South Africa when a woman from Soweto told her she was waiting for a flying saucer to return. The woman claimed she and her kids had joined the extra-terrestrials for a joyride two years ago - and the space invaders were due back any day. Shirley followed the family to the rendezvous point near Johannesburg - but the aliens, probably caught in a meteorite storm, failed to show. Shirley refused to comment. But you'll probably read all about it in her next mind-bending book" (Daily Mirror, August 1993)
