Hawaiian Sightings

December 7th, 1941: UFOs Watched Japs Bomb Pearl Harbor - article.

1944: Kaneohe, Oahu. An account of an alien encounter with governmental aftereffects was told by a man in his sixties, identified as EL, to both Don Worley and Leonard Stringfield - Mr.Stringfield commented that some of the details made the story 'difficult to believe.'

EL was walking along the Kaneohe beaches, one Sunday morning, when he caught sight of a 'glint of metal reflecting sunlight near a wooded ridge, not far from a radar installation.' He found out that the glint was coming from an object that "looked like an igloo, except on the top was a clear glass dome about a foot high with a gold device, like a weather vane, spinning inside." And around it, were a group of small human-like beings, clothed in tight-fitting green uniforms. They had short black hair, large dark eyes and heavy eyebrows, and 'wore a heavy belt with box-like apparatus attached in front.'

At first EL thought these people, who were all staring at him, were "just small Navy people used in submarine duty"; but then one spoke to him in a 'heavy accent' and oddly deep voice. One other then pressed a button that made EL 'dizzy and nauseous,' and then drew a 'sword-like' thing from 'a scabbard.' A fight ensued, with EL using his knife, and getting on top of the small attacker. Amazingly, the other people then killed their fellow alien.

The 'leader' told EL to meet him again the following morning 'to talk by a large black rock.' Then, he was told that the aliens came from 21 light years away, that they had colonized the Earth eons ago, and that this was the beginning of a period of visits by them.

A witness reported EL's encounter (probably just the first one), and Naval Intelligence, OSS and the FBI were called in to interrogate him. EL had taken the black box-like apparatus from the dead alien... and.. it is this single feature that lends by far the most credibility to the account for me, because a 'black box' has featured in other reported alien encounters.
[Furthermore, and at a tangent from actual sightings and alien encounters, during the last ten years or so of the 20th Century, there was a pop group called Black Box, who had a no.1 single, and released an LP called 'Dreamland' (another name for 'Area 51'). And, a model of an alien holding a black box could be seen in an Oxford Circus, London department store window display, one Christmas].

1944: 'According to Robert Barry, Hawaii has been the locale for several crashes and survival reports...
"...This incident involved a space craft that was likewise out of control and crashed in Hawaii. Again, it's the same old story: the military to the rescue. In this particular case, the NAVY CB unit was involved in the retrieval of the craft and its surviving aliens.
Several of the aliens were reported still alive at the crash site and one military man at the scene personally witnessed the removal of one live alien from the crashed craft.
What happened to them from this point is not known, but without doubt, they were taken to a Naval Hospital where attempts at saving their lives undoubtedly occurred and if successful, the next move would have been attempted communication..." '

circa-1944: Howard Menger, then a battalion draftsman, who worked on detached service with the Navy, had an impulse to go to a cavern area, a few miles away from an unspecified location. He had met Space People earlier in his life, and sensed that the reason he then felt drawn to go to a particular place, was that one of the Space People intended to meet him there.

Mr.Menger met 'a beautiful woman with long dark hair and dark eyes,' who was clothed in 'loosely fitted pajama-type pantaloons,' and a 'soft.. translucent and pinkish' tunic. The woman was 5' 6" tall, and 'exuded the same expression of spiritual love and deep understanding,' that he had known from the first Space Woman he had met.

Howard Menger was told - among other things - that he had been observed closely by the Extraterrestrials, that he was trusted by them, and that he would experience further contacts.

U.S.Air Force Captain Paul Storey (or Stoney) saw one flat white, elliptical object with a matte top circle while oscillating to the right and left. Sped away...['There was the disc reported by an Air Force officer at Hickam Field, Hawaii, on Jan.4, 1949. The account, investigators reported, "seems to be trustworthy, even though only one person saw the disc. The report differs from many others in that the description of maneuvers executed by the object is definite rather than hazy. There is clearly no astronomical explanation for this incident." '..another amazing sighting involving five more airliners and five more saucers took place about 1,000 miles east of Honolulu... The most detailed report available to the public was that of Captain George Wilson.. Pan-American Airways pilot.. He was flying from San Francisco to Honolulu. He said - "At 3.02 a.m. Hawaii time I saw one intensely bright white light followed by four smaller lights..."
Captain Wilson, visibly shaken by his experience, went on - "My co-pilot, Richard Lorenzen.. and flight engineer Robert Scott, stared open-mouthed as the light came towards us at an extremely high rate of speed.
For at least ten seconds it maintained its course, which was on an opposite heading to us; and had it been another aircraft it would have passed well to our left.
Suddenly the object made a sharp right turn at a speed inconceivable to any vehicle we know and the light suddenly disappeared. The smaller lights were evenly spaced and were either a part of the mysterious object, or this was an example of darned good formation flying."
When he landed in Honolulu Captain Wilson said he had never seen anything like this in his nineteen years of flying. He added that he had never believed such foreign objects existed.
"I'm a believer now," he said.
The other pilots who filed reports were Captain Lloyd Moffatt of Canadian Pacific Airways; First Officer Erwin Zedwick of Slick Airways; Captain Noble Sprunger of Pan-American Airways; and Captain E.G.Kelley, also of Pan-American.
Captain Moffatt confirmed Captain Wilson's story. He said - "You can take it from me they were there. I never saw anything like it in my life and there are five of us who saw the same thing at the same time." ' (B. Le Poer Trench 'The Sky People')

1960: Honolulu-California. 'In 1960 when I was in Los Angeles lecturing at a saucer convention the headline Phantom Space Lights Seen Over LA appeared in the papers. Six saucers had followed a passenger plane from Honolulu to California..' (Laura Mundo)

Honolulu. 'The pattern made by the Australian UFO was like the symbol for the word "And" (&).. made in one twentieth of a second! .. completing two loops. Laura was given a black/white still photo (taken from a color movie that she saw) of four Adamski-shaped Venusian saucers doing the same thing, taken by a touring American couple over Honolulu in 1960.. which we included in our early flying saucer booklet Flying Saucers.. (Out of print, but which will be included in Flying Saucer Finale! on which she is working, which we hope will come out to the public, and will not be handled by us). It showed the four saucers making 180 degree turns, not affected by the pull of gravity.. when their higher neutronic forcefield is on the lighted "trails" being actually, as Laura explained, ionized atoms of the atmosphere which the ships had created with their forcefield when they passed through, not chemical jet trails; glowing at night. The photo was given to Laura by an early UFO researcher, Wayne Aho, a former Air Force Intelligence Officer, who unfortunately now is in the psychic aspect of saucer research...'

March 11th, 1963: Oahu. A brilliant light, heading west and leaving a trail, was observed by many people, just after 8pm. Two National Guard Pilots, flying jets about 40 miles west of Honolulu, reported the UFO was "much higher" than their altitude of 40,000 feet, and moving "very fast." It was considered that these may have been observations of the A-11, an experimental recovery craft believed to be operating in the area at the time. (R.Loftin/FSR 9-3)

'Mystery Space Object Sighted by Hawaiians... (UPI) - An unidentified flying object, traveling at a "very high altitude and a high rate of speed," was sighted by hundreds of persons in the Hawaiian Islands last night.

Two Hawaii Air National Guard pilots said they saw the object north of the island of Kauai during a routine training mission in jet fighters at an altitude of 40,000 feet. Honolulu newspapers and radio stations were flooded with calls.

Capt. Jon Parish said he thought the object was "possibly a rocket or some sort of space object flying a predetermined course." Lt. George Joy said he thought it was the Milky Way at first, but then noticed that it left a visible vapor trail.'

August 13th, 1963: Honolulu. While vacationing in Hawaii, a chemist observed a UFO and reported it to NICAP. Dr.Richard Turse of Princeton, New Jersey, at about 11.30pm, saw a round, reddish object passing overhead from southwest to northeast. The UFO "travelled across the sky at great speed, making two sharp turns at the same speed." (Loftin)

May 23rd, 1965: A schoolteacher in Kailua, witnessed a white disc, at 8.50pm, that appeared to be about 3 feet in diameter. It was travelling fast, with no sound, at an altitude of approximately 100ft.; direction was northeast to southwest. (Loftin)

June 1965: Astronauts Ed White and James McDivitt were passing over Hawaii in Gemini Spacecraft when they saw a metallic object.

circa-1966: Milton William Cooper joined the Navy in December 1965. After boot camp, he was stationed at a submarine base at Pearl Harbor. One afternoon, on board the USS Tiru, during a transit between the Portland-Seattle area and Pearl Harbor, he was on watch as port lookout, and observed through binoculars a huge disc 'the size of an aircraft carrier' rise out from the ocean.

Water was 'streaming from the air around it,' as it tumbled 'lazily on its axis,' and disappeared among the clouds. Shortly afterwards, he saw it reappear - 'The giant saucer shape plunged out of the clouds, tumbled, and pushing the water before it, opened up a hole in the ocean and disappeared from view.. its size in comparison with the total view was nothing short of astounding.'

The craft was also seen by the starboard lookout and the Officer of the Deck. The ship's sonar reported contact underwater at the same bearing, and, soon, the same object or an identical-appearing one was seen to rise slowly from the water, turn in the air, tilt at an angle and vanish once more. According to the account of William Cooper, this time photographs were taken by the ship's Chief Quartermaster.

Mr.Cooper's account further states that what he had witnessed was a metal structure, of a dull colour, somewhat like pewter, and intelligently controlled. And, that for about a further 10 minutes, the craft was watched going down into the water and rising up out again.

Witnesses to the incident were questioned by a commander from the Office of Naval Intelligence, and William Cooper was made to sign a statement stating that should he ever reveal what had happened, he 'could be fined up to $10,000 or imprisoned for up to 10 years, or both.' In addition, he could 'lose all pay and allowances due or ever to become due...'

January 22nd, 1967: Various sightings were made on the island of Oahu, between 5.50am and 6.30am. (FSR 13-4)

At 1.30pm, later that day, a group of UFOs were seen by five Air Force Officers, flying in formation over Hickam AFB. (FSR 13-4)

pre-July 1967: Kalihi. '3 in Kalihi See Whirling Globes in Sky... Three Kalihi girls yesterday told police they saw "three light, spinning objects high above the clouds."

The girls said the objects were round and were spinning clockwise, moving across the sky toward Kaneohe shortly after 2 p.m.

Police received several reports of unidentified flying objects here during the last week.'

1968: Pacific Ocean {Hawaii - Alaska} '..UFO stories, whatever their source, sometimes come from credible sources. Maj. Ann Crum of the Air National Guard's 187th Tactical Fighter Group at Dannelly Field tells of a aircraft commander of a B-52 bomber who came into her office back in 1968 and asked what the procedure was for reporting a UFO. Mrs.Crum at the time was the wing executive officer at Carswell Air Force Base in Texas.

The commander was a major and a seasoned aviator, she recalled, and his crew had returned from a flight across the Pacific Ocean. "He swore something flew with them," she said. The crew's instruments got a reading of something following the bomber for a long way after takeoff in Hawaii en route to Alaska, the B-52 commander said.

"He said it hovered over the aircraft and then underneath, but it stayed with them," Mrs.Crum said...' (UFO Newsclipping Service 182)

September 1970: 'In August 1971, Dick and Nancy Allerton, of Pontiac, Michigan, showed us two photos they had taken in Honolulu on their honeymoon, in September 1970, among others. In two different photos, on the same roll of film, a round solid object showed up, over two different areas, THAT THEY HAD NOT SEEN WHEN FLYING OVER HONOLULU, BUT WERE THERE....' (Laura Mundo 'Flying Saucer Up-Day)

October 1973: UPI c.25.10.1973 - 'Over Hilo, on the big island of Hawaii, three firemen and an air traffic controller spotted an unidentified flying object (UFO), three times the size of Venus...

In Hawaii, sightings have been made on several islands recently, some by newsmen, some by citizens. The latest was Thursday night, over Hilo, and was seen by firemen and an air traffic controller.

Lt.James Higashite Jr., a firemen, said it was moving east-northeast and said.. "we are trained observers with binoculars and telescopes. It looked like a large star but it has artificial lighting." He and two other firemen saw it.

So did Hilo airport traffic controller Harry Marks. Marks said no flights were in the area, and the object shot straight up into the sky 10 minutes after it appeared.'

October 1985: 'It all started in October 1985, on a trip a friend and I made to Maui. One day we were both laying in the sun and I was doing a mental exercise that I have done for 10 years whenever I go out into the sun. What I do, is cup my hands like a satellite dish and I picture the energy from the sun bearing in a certain area of my brain. Anyway, we were laying there and I got this strange feeling. Something told me to look up and what I saw was incredible. It was a UFO. I know it was! It had to be! It just stayed in one area; it was a disk; it was shiny; it looked like platinum. I was amazed and I told my friend to look up, but he didn't believe me. I got upset because he wouldn't listen to me. It was there for about three minutes and then it suddenly vanished. The rest of the day it was all I could think about...'

August 16th, 1987: Near Mauna Kea Observatory; evening. Michele Jamal and four others saw two amber lights in the sky. After a short period of time, these 'headbeams' suddenly 'rose up from out of the cloud and an enormous wheel of rotating lights appeared, flickering like a giant spinning sparkler.'

Ms.Jamal recounts - 'There was a magical quality to the dazzling wheel, like fairy lights. 'Oh God!' I cried out, while everyone else had responses of awe. We were all on the edge of our seats peering out, the brilliant flying object reminiscent of the flying ship of a vision, shimmering against the black volcanic mountain. I felt a tingling shoot through my body, transmitted perhaps from the space vehicle. I had no doubt the Mother Ship had come...'
