October 14th, 1882:
This illustration and the explanatory text are from The Case For The UFO by M.K.Jessup -

These six UFO's were seen and drawn by Astronomer Barnard.. and were only 6 degrees from the head of the great comet of 1882. They were accompanied by a spindle-shaped object, looking like a "mother ship" only a few degrees away. This comet had a tail which preceded it, and a complicated head which contained moving parts. Schmidt, at Athens, saw a number of these nebulous UFO's move away from the comet into space.

February 24th & 25th, 1893:
Between Shanghai and Japan - '..during the recent winter cruise of 'H.M.S.Caroline,' a curious phenomenon was seen. The officer of the watch reported seeing unusual lights, sometimes a mass, at others, spread out in an irregular line. They bore north, until he lost sight of them at midnight... These globes of fire altered their formation... now in a massed group with an outlying light, then the isolated one would disappear, and the others would take the form of a crescent of diamonds.' (FSOM) Click here for the complete original report.

February 9th, 1913:
'..a number of luminous bodies were seen flying over Toronto, Canada. Thousands of persons saw them flying in V formations of three from Saskatchewan to the Bermudas. Observers remarked that some had luminous trails. They flew much too slowly to be taken for meteors. Others noticed "lights" flying at their heads, sterns or sides.' (JGuieu)
...From the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (Nov./Dec.1913) - 'A strange spectacle was seen in Canada, the U.S.A., at sea, and in Bermuda... A luminous body was seen, with a long tail attached to it. The body grew rapidly larger. Observers differ whether this body was single, or in three or four parts, with a tail to each. The group, or complex structure, moved with a peculiar, majestic deliberation. It disappeared in the distance, and another group emerged from its place of origin. Onward they moved, at the same deliberate pace, in twos, threes, or fours. A third group, or structure followed.' [Professor Chant, Toronto]
'There were probably 30 or 32 bodies, and the peculiar thing... was their moving in threes or fours, abreast of each other, and so perfect with their lining up that you would have thought it was an aerial fleet manoeuvring after rigid drilling..' [Another witness] (FSOM)

March 1944: At Yakima, Washington, USA, seven "pebble-shaped" ten-foot diameter objects were seen flying in V formation. (Project Delta)

1944: Japan - 'An official Japanese Army photographer snapped pictures of a wide "v" formation of 6 bright misty-looking disc-shaped flying objects above an airborne formation of Japanese Army Fighter aircraft above a cloud formation. (UFO Photographs Around The World catalogue)

World War Two:

This triangular formation of lights was captured on film in the proximity of (allied?) aircraft during World War II. The complete photograph and others were supplied to Italian UFO researcher Fabio di Rado. The story/photos can be found in the article Foo Fighters And The SAS: Documents reinforce claims by former WWII spy, published in in the January 2002 issue of UFO magazine, in which credit is also given to Giorgio Bongiovanni/UFO La Visita Extraterrestre.

August 1946: '..a man near Great Lakes Naval Training Center spotted three "silver disks" flying in a triangular formation over Lake Michigan.' (MDHall)

c.May 5th, 1947: A couple with the surname 'Olavick' saw ten flying discs, near Tucson, Arizona. Nine of them were smaller than the tenth, and those ones began "playing around the cloud" in manoeuvres lasting about 7 minutes. Then, they regrouped in a V formation behind the larger object, and flew away extremely fast. (AL)

June 14th, 1947: In Bakersfield, California, it was a clear and sunny day, when an experienced pilot and a boy mowing a lawn, saw ten round objects fly overhead in a loose V formation - one somewhat behind the others. The discs were about 30 to 35 feet in diameter and were moving at an estimated speed of 350 mph. Seven of them reversed direction, going back over the heads of the witnesses. (AL)

June 30th, 1947: At 2.30pm, several witnesses saw a flight of eight to ten objects in a V-formation, near Hailey, Idaho - 'Witness Walter Nicholson stated that the left wing of the V formation contained five disc-shaped objects in perfect line but the ones on the right "seemed to weave." Forest ranger Hunter Nelson, who was marking trees with Nicholson three miles from Galena Summit, counted seven to nine objects in the V formation. / He stated that they were moving extremely fast and were as high as 10,000 feet heading northeast. Although both men said the objects were so high that they only looked like shiny specks in the sky, they told UFO researcher Dr.James McDonald years later that they had never seen anything like it before or since and were positive they had not seen conventional aircraft. Both men stressed that point, stating that they flew "much faster than any aircraft of that day." ' (AL)

July 1st, 1947: Roswell, New Mexico, USA; 11.30pm. 'Major Jesse Marcel.. observed a perfect V-formation of lights flying across the city in a southerly direction. "Our planes are not that fast," was his first thought. As he learned later, no U.S. planes had been in the air that night. Some GIs and MPs also saw the spectacle.' (Bob Pratt interview w/Col.Jesse Marcel, 8.12.79 + BRos)

July 4th, 1947: 'Kjell Qvale, an automobile salesman in Alameda and a former Navy pilot for five years, reported that he and a group of 50 other witnesses had watched a triangular formation of disc-like objects near Auburn (California) at 2:30 P.M. PST, flying south. Qvale said that the discs seen first directly overhead, "appeared to be made of metal and looked like bright silver." He added that their round outline was clearly distinguishable. The objects were in view "for three or four minutes," he said. "I have seen a lot of airplanes, and these were not airplanes. The only clue I could get as to their height, size and speed was the fact that they disappeared one at a time, high in the sky, and not over the horizon. This effort would be caused if they were very, very large and very high, and flying at a terrific speed - 1,000 miles an hour," he said.' (AL/TedBl as July 5th)

V-formation of flying discs sighted that night in Denver, Colorado, also, by a married couple. The witnesses, Mr. and Mrs.L.A.Walgren described the discs as having the appearance of a "rippling, v-shaped cloud," reflecting the city lights on their undersides. (TedBl)

At Twin Falls, Idaho, about 60 people saw three groups of discs, each numbering more than 35, flying in a V-formation.

July 5th, 1947: At Dallas, Texas '..Dexter McEwen.. reported that he had seen three disc-like objects flying near Dallas at 11:00 p.m.
"They were moving horizontally," he said, "but very high in the sky, like falling stars, only they left no streaks. They seemed to be moving in a V-formation." ' (TedBl)

July 6th, 1947: Two sightings of V-formations in New Orleans -
One of these, in the morning, was made by a U.S.Army private Robert G.Hellman, who was on his way to his hotel room, when he saw four discs flashing at great height over Canal Street.
He said that he was expecting to see something of the sort - "..There were four of them, flying in a V-formation, one side of the V longer than the other; but the fact which struck me was this: the discs were colored, like colored saucers, pink and silver, whirling through the sky."
At 5:10 p.m. on the same day, while boating on Lake Pontchartrain, Mr. and Mrs.H.Lee Brady, in company with a party of four others, saw a V-formation of three shiny, disc-like objects "at great altitude headed north at great speed." They were only in view for three or four seconds, before disappearing into a cloud. (TedBl)

In the evening, fourteen year-old John Heathcote saw three "plate-like" objects over Valley Stream, New York. They were flying in a V formation toward the west. (AL)

In Denver, Colorado '..Harold Wallace.. saw a group of disc-like objects "shooting" westward across the sky at 9:05 p.m. MST. He said they were in a V-formation and "made a dim light." '
There was another reported sighting in Denver, of two shiny, silver flying discs, just two minutes later. (TedBl)

July 7th, 1947: near Greensboro, North Carolina, USA; 6.30pm. While driving towards Greensboro, Albert Riggs, a cadet who was accompanied by a hitchhiker saw '..a triangular formation of three discs passing rapidly overhead.' Greyish-black in colour, they '..had a slight side-to-side motion as they traveled approximately 200 to 300 feet above the ground. Riggs said that as they passed overhead, he heard "a zipping noise." He estimated their speed at 500 miles an hour, and they quickly "lost themselves in the distance."' (TedBl)

near Glenn County, California - In the afternoon '..two farmers harvesting barley noticed the sun reflecting off three "rows" of discs flying overhead. They estimated that there were at least twenty-five craft flying at great speed, moving with an aup and down and side to side tipping motion. Before they passed out of sight the three row formation changed into a perfect V formation..' (AL)

For a few seconds, at about 5.20pm, Miss Louise M.Sheffield, a secretary in the Engineering Department of Dupont's Chester, Pennsylvania division, saw five dull grey objects flying soundlessly in a V formation. (AL/PrN47)

'..Des Moines, Iowa: Merle Steffenson, a 15-year-old high school student of 2327 Maple Street, reported that he saw three disc-like objects flying north in formation at about 6:00 p.m. CST, while he was riding his motor bike northeast on Avenue Ferderick M.Hubbell.
"They looked to me like they were awfully high," he said. "They must have been big because they were so high and still I could see them."
Young Steffenson said they were silvery in color and that they traveled northward in a straight course "very fast." At one point "they turned at an angle and were so thin I couldn't see them," he asserted. (TedBl)

At 6.30pm, in Tampa, Florida, George Gortez, and several others, observed a V formation of three "golden coloured" objects flying slowly overhead. (AL/PrN47)

Columbus, Ohio - 'Five summer students at Ohio State University were batting baseballs around on the varsity practise diamond at 7:45 p.m. EST when one of them noticed three oval objects flying in triangular formation overhead. The objects, noiseless, appeared to be about ten feet in diameter, and were moving at a high speed.. none of the students were able to make out any apparent means of propulsion. They estimated the formation was at an altitude of 1,000 feet..
All five witnesses were in agreement on the details of the observation, but none of them had any idea what the objects might be.' (TedBl)

Manchester, New Hampshire - 'Two men made almost identical reports of seeing three yellow disc-like objects in V-formation moving northwest over the city at high speed about 9:00 p.m. EDT. Roger Plaisant, of 842 Clay Street, and Henry Ray, of 834 Somerville Street, agreed that the objects seemed to be high in the sky, and Ray added that they appeared "egg-shaped," and were quite bright.' (TedBl)

Milton, Wisconsin - 'Three.. college students reported seeing a V-formation of three objects late in the evening. The formation came out of the north-west and was described as moving in "a westerly direction." Paul Schroeder, John Potts, and Harris Buros watched the objects for two minutes before they disappeared behind some tall buildings. The young men described the objects as being circular in shape, aluminium-colored, rotating slowly and leaving vapor trails. Seen at a distance they estimated was about ten miles to the west, the three witnesses said the objects appeared to be at an altitude of about 4,000 feet. (TedBl)

Tacoma, Washington - 'M.C.Streans, of 913 South L, reported that he had seen three discs from his bedroom window about 10:45 p.m. PST. They were in V-formation and flying at terrific speed, and were brightly illuminated.' (TedBl)

July 8th, 1947: '..Two Johannesburg residents have reported that they saw
"flying saucers" over the city early yesterday.
They said the objects were as big as gramaphone records and were revolving at a great speed in a "V" formation. The objects disappeared in a cloud of smoke, they added..'
(PrN47site)

August 1st, 1947: Areches, Savoie, France - '..two women reported three dark, domed discs in a triangular formation, that appeared from behind a mountain. They flew in a straight line from WSW ro ENE. Each object had a lower part rotating and an upper part motionless. They appeared to be metallic.' (PrN47)

August 7th, 1947: Helena, Montana, USA; 2am - 'Peggy Mitchell, 610 North Logan, and five other girls at a slumber party saw a number of light orange objects in a "V" formation. The objects were traveling at a terrific rate of speed, too fast to count, but they estmated that there were about 12. Miss Jaque Cauble had seen UFOs in early summer in Boise, Idaho, and recognized them from that sighting.' (PrN47)

Late summer-early fall, 1947: Halethorpe, Baltimore, Maryland, USA; 1-1.30pm - '..five bright, glistening silver teardrop-shaped objects in a "V"-formation were seen by a pilot-navigator and a neighbour through 8-power Zeiss Binoculars. The objects were sharply outlined, about the size of a half-dollar held at arm's length.. (they) were at an azimuth of 170 degrees and about 30 degrees elevation.. motionless for about 30 minutes.. Then, suddenly, all five shot out of sight.. towards Washington D.C... without breaking formation.' (PrN47)

This photograph, according to the book Flying Saucers Over Los Angeles, has not been credited to anyone, and shows 'early saucers over Los Angeles.' It is remarkably consistent with many witness descriptions of V-formations.

July 24th, 1949: Around midday, at Mnt.Home, Idaho, USA, seven delta wing, dark-coloured objects were sighted moving through the sky in a V formation, at a speed of about 600mph. They turned without banking. Altitude was estimated at 8,500 feet. (PrD)

August 11th, 1951: Portland, Oregon, USA - Three objects seen flying in a perfect V formation. (PrD)

August 30th, 1951: Lubbock, Texas, USA; about midnight.
During August and September 1951, numerous Lubbock residents saw formations of unidentified lights in the sky. Carl Hart, 18 years old, took five photographs, with a 35mm Kodak camera, of lights that he saw rapidly cross the sky, while changing positions. Each print showed a V or V within V formation, with one or two lights isolated from the main group. Although some have tried to explain the photos as a flock of wildlife, photographic experimentation and the views of wildlife experts have clearly shown this to be impossible. (LG8 / UFOR11)

The fourth of the Carl Hart photos.

August 31st, 1951: Lubbock, Texas, USA; evening - '..The Avalanche received word that the strange objects had been observed at three different distinct times from 8:40 to 10:37 p.m. that Friday evening. All the witnesses said the objects were flying in a V-shaped or U-shaped formation and had zoomed overhead at tremendous velocity being in view only 3-7 seconds. Estimates of the number of objects ranged from "8-9" to "20-30." ' (LG8)

May 1st, 1952: 4 miles SE of George AFB, California, USA; 10.50am. A major, one of a group of four playing golf, observed, for 15 seconds, five UFOs moving faster than any jet he'd ever seen. They were a "flat white" colour and either spherical or disc-shaped, sharply outlined against a mountain. At first they travelled with three in front and two "straggling" behind; but suddenly they pulled up into a tight "V" formation, made a close to 90 degree turn and zoomed over the mountain.
A group of airmen from George AFB firing range sighted the 5 UFOs at the same time. (CEJR/Golf)

June 17th, 19th & 23rd, 1952: near McChord AFB, USA; nighttime. '..another series of orb sightings. Captain Harnnagy of the 4704th Defense Wing filled Ruppelt in on a series of incidents that had taken place on the nights of June 17, 19 & 23 - all within 20 miles of the base! These reports involved sightings of luminous objects which could not have been aircraft lights due to their unique characteristics and brightness. The great agility demonstrated by some of the objects and the size of others that flew in a V formation eliminated any possibility of domestic aircraft.' (CEJR)

July 16th, 1952: 'This photograph was taken at Salem, Massachusetts.. by the sailor Shell Alpert, who saw four luminous discs flying over the outskirts of the town.' (JGuieu) 'A U.S. Coast Guard photographer took this phenomenal photograph through a window, at Salem, Mass., U.S.A., Air Station in 1952. He watched several brilliant lights in the sky for five or six seconds, then called another Coast Guard to see the strange sight. In these few seconds, the brilliant white of the lights had dimmed somewhat, but when it brightened again, he quickly photographed them..' (FSOM)

July 20th, 1952: Staten Island, New York, USA; 10.15pm. 'Five king-sized flying saucers - about as big as dinner plates - were reported yesterday by two Staten Island residents. The saucers or plates, silent, glowing with reddish rims, passed over West Brighton toward Manhattan in V-formation at 10:15 p.m. Friday night.
Mrs. Josephine Hetzel, house-wife, of 17 West St., and her neighbor, Frank Gondar, a toy shop operator, of 15 West St., both West Brighton, saw them.'

Witnesses, Lt.Col.John McGuinn & Lt.Col.John R.Barton '..were both command pilots with very distinguished service careers, logging several thousand hours each. They were assigned to the Pentagon with highly classified assignments and were perfectly familiar with even the most secret foreign and domestic aircraft designs. Neither had seen anything remotely like these objects before...' (PrD/MDH)

Same day, over Carson Sink, three 'silvery triangles' were seen flying in V formation, at an estimated speed of 1,000 mph. (PrD)

July 19th, 1953: A report by Norman H.Brown, Acting Chief, Review & Analysis Section, Atomic Energy Commission. It was filed as 'Air Space Violation at Oak Ridge, Tennessee' -
'At approximately 3:00 PM.. an F-86 aircraft was observed flying over Oak Ridge residential area, making circles at what appeared to the writer to be approximately 2,500 to 3,500 ft. the F-86 flew over the area in this manner for approximately ten or fifteen minutes. The writer, together with his wife, observed the aircraft through a pair of six power field glasses. After the aircraft flew in what appeared to be the direction of Knoxville, Tennessee, a black object moved out of a high white cloud, directly over the area the F-86 had been flying.
The object began to travel at a tremendous speed, in a large circle.
This action on the part of the unknown object continued for at least five minutes. During the circle of this object, it appeared at times to be in the shape of a cigar and at other times round. This object was extremely black in color, having an appearance of a deep black metal exterior with a fine gloss. It did not leave a vapor trail or were there any lights shine (sic) noticed. No sound was heard. The object flew east at a tremendous speed for what appeared to be approximately three miles where it stopped. the objects (sic) was then joined by two more of these same objects. A formation similar to a spread 'V' was formed and the objects, at a tremendous speed flew in an eastward direction.'
(Maccabee/MUFOJ205)

1953: [Same event reported as Idaho, 1954 below]. In the Idaho, Utah and Rocky Mountain region of USA '..four groups of four objects were seen standing in a vertical V formation. They moved together at an estimated 3,000 mph.'.. breaking up into a different grouping. These objects were identical, and surrounded by an aura. (PrD)

March 25th, 1954: At about 10.30 p.m., thirteen round objects that glowed fluorescent white were seen flying in perfect V formation, by crewmembers of an aeroplane over Baltimore, Maryland, USA... 'Then another object estimated to be 50 feet diameter approached the V formation.. and took up a position directly at its apex, leading them all. After they travelled farther.. the left-most six objects of the V split off toward the commercial airplane..' and moved off in a straight line in single file. (PrD)

April 26th, 1954: It was 8.35pm in Athens, Georgia, USA, when four people saw fifteen to twenty round yellow-white objects moving in a straight trajectory across the sky, below the clouds. the objects arranged themselves into a perfect V formation during the observation of just ten seconds. (PrD)

May 13th, 1954: 'It was reported from Hammerfest, Norway, that.. three bright objects passed over Kautokeino (in northern Norway) at great speed. They flew in V-formation and disappeared toward the southwest. A deputy constable who had observed them with binoculars stated that they flew so high that he could not ascertain their shape but that they were not ordinary airplanes. He added that they seemed to be red on one side and white on the other and appeared to be rotating.' 'Oslo, 14 May -- Luftkommando Nord (Air Command North) has received a number of reports that indicate that the flying objects observed over Finnmark Province, Norway, at 1210 hours on 13 May were not conventional aircraft or meteorological balloons. Sheriff Oskal of Kautokeino, three of his deputies, and two clerks observed the three objects through binoculars for 4-5 minutes. Oskal described them as flying in formation at an altitude of about 2,000 meters, being triangular in shape [sic: probably a reference to the V-formation mentioned above], reddish brown on the underside and shiny on the upper, and moving with a rotary motion. they left no smoke. the weather was clear and visibility perfect.'

May 15th, 1954: Someone in Southampton, U.K., was looking at the Moon through a 45-power telescope when he saw eighteen "vivid blue pin-points" in a V formation. Seen at their clearest, they looked like symmetrical discs with "something rising up in the centre." They seemed to be shaped the same, with a brilliant blue light coming from their dome-sections. (PrD)

June 1954: Utica, Michigan, USA. 'A case of ten silvery, disc-shaped objects circling a B-29 bomber.. has been reported to NICAP by a former Ground Observer Corps Chief Observer...
Mr.Vargo was working in his yard when he heard the B-29 and looked up. As he watched the bomber proceeding on a westerly course, he saw a "V" of shiny discs following it. The UFOs then completely circled the bomber, changing position in formation. At one point several of the discs sped westward in the direction of two Piper Cub aircraft, then returned to the B-29.
(Gary J.Vargo) and his mother watched the UFOs for about 20 minutes as (they) manoeuvred in formation, reflecting sunlight from apparently metallic surfaces.
Finally the UFOs, still in formation, climbed high in the sky at tremendous speed and disappeared from view in a matter of seconds.' (UFOInv II-6)

July 22nd, 1954: In the evening, a V formation of objects was seen flying over Winnipeg, Canada. Thirty seconds observation. (PrD)

October 8th, 1954: 'Los Angeles and other Southern California cities.. newspapers published stories about a group of objects in V-formation. Seen by pilots, two CBS reporters, many people and police. the Air Force said these were KC-97 planes.' (Flying Saucers, 6-68)

October 25th, 1954: At Belgrade, Yugoslavia '..A single V shaped formation of at least twenty bluish, glowing, metallic objects passed across the sky in the direction of the point..' Each had a glowing trail behind it. Speed estimated at 2,000 mph; altitude 9,000 feet. (PrD)

November 26th, 1954: 'Millville, New Jersey (USA). Disc with four body lights, "forming rectangles." When searchlight focused on it, UFO sped away. Large V-formation of round UFOs (number not given) sighted by several witnesses 70 miles to the northeast, the same night.' (Ln)

1954: Idaho, USA. Mel Noel was flying north, towards Canada, in a formation of F-86 jet aircraft, at 38,000 feet altitude. Suddenly, sixteen disc-shaped objects came from above and flew in a V-formation in front of them. The four F-86 pilots flew on, following them and taking pictures with their gun cameras as instructed by the Colonel in charge -
'Noel reported that the discs in formation, flew at times from five to six times faster than their speed... the saucers flew circles around them.. at one period flew close, only 1,000 feet from them, and affirmed they would then speed up, stop, reverse direction and perform manoeuvres impossible to achieve with conventional aircraft. When the pilots landed, all film was removed from their gun cameras and sent to Washington D.C.'

March 14th, 1955: Leesburg, Florida, USA -
'A phone call to the Commercial last night about 9 0'clock was answered by a reporter working late, and the caller asked if anyone else had reported seeing "flying saucers" in the last few minutes.
George Tetrault unhesitatingly gave his name when a request for further information was made, and said he and a friend, Harry Boltman, had been fishing in Lake Harris and were just coming in to the landing at Venetian Gardens when they noticed the peculiar flying phenomenon.
"It looked like objects flying in a large V formation, " said Tetrault, "going very fast and too high to distinguish definite shapes. It appeared to be twenty or thirty objects surrounded by a hazy reddish glow and headed north at a high rate of speed." Tetrault would like to know if anyone else saw the eerie flying shapes, and would like to compare impressions.' (TUAn)

Late-July 1955: Salem, Oregon, USA - 'Three cloud-coloured objects, size and shape undetermined because of their height, were sighted going from south to north over Salem shortly after 2:00 p.m. Saturday by a resident of the area nine miles south near Highway 99E.
A high-flying plane was seen travelling in the opposite direction on a similar line a minute or two later, "but it wasn't anything like the other three things which were in V-formation and alternating between going extremely fast and considerably slower," he said. the informant said the formation was in sight about sixty seconds.' (TUAn)

May 15th, 1956: 'Police Lieutenant P.Robinson, of Police H.Q., Johore Bahru, reports that at 9:15 p.m. (Malaya time) on May 15.. both he and his son, aged eight, were looking at the moon. Lieutenant Robinson was using a pair of 20 by 60 binoculars. The moon was a quarter at about 45 degrees NW. At about 40 degrees NNW, he saw what appeared at first to be a cigar-shaped silver light, stationary, with the under-surface in shadow. the object covered about half the diameter of his binocular field, and he estimated it to be 500 feet long and 60 feet at its greatest diameter and about three miles away.

The object then appeared to break up into four discs of a bluish-green-white light and they each appeared about 100 feet in diameter. They then formed a "V", but the cigar-shaped shadow seemed to be still there. The forming took three or four seconds and then the discs moved off in a southerly direction. He lost them after about five seconds as their vertical diameter decreased, and they then disappeared after appearing cigar-shaped for a second or two. the whole sighting lasted about 20 seconds; the sky was very clear and there was no sound.

Lieutenant Robinson's son also saw the discs without binoculars as they were forming into the "V", and to him they appeared as large as large round points of light when they disappeared.
Lieutenant Robinson was a searchlight night spotter for some time during the war and was trained in the use of binoculars and predictor telescopes at night. In thousands of hours night spotting he has seen many combinations of light reflections on clouds, planes, parachutes and balloons. They appeared solid and metallic, and as if giving off their own light.
This sighting took place the night before the start of the atomic bomb test off the Australian coast. (FSRWRUFO)

August 28th, 1956: Four young men - Leon Febres, Miguel Talavera, Jesus Prada, and Tomas Hernandez - experienced a dramatic nighttime sighting over Calabozo, Venezuela... 'They reported.. that while going home at 11:30.. they had sighted "strange contraptions" which raced at a fantastic speed leaving behind a wake of phosphorescent smoke which dissipated rapidly. Their attention was first drawn to the phenomenon when the ground around them was suddenly lit up by bright white light, which turned the night into day. Looking up they saw floating above them a gigantic disk-shaped object, which seemed to be sitting absolutely still in the sky. (They) stood rooted to the spot, unable to follow their immediate reaction to run.. they were startled to see small objects with the shape of the large disk apparently emerge from it. After the small objects had cleared the big ship, the whole group flew into the west in a perfect V formation with the large object in the lead..'

May 1957: 'FOUR CALIFORNIANS SEE UFO FORMATIONS. Four people, Mr. and Mrs.McCracken, Mrs.Cecil Hamilton and Mr.Albert Chew, all saw three formations of UFO's fly across the heavens. Altogether, there were about 20 to 25 of them. Mr.McCracken said the objects were noiseless and it was difficult to make out their exact shape. "Either they had flashing lights," he said, "or they were reflecting sunlight. They travelled at a rapid clip, much faster than aircraft." / Mr.McCracken told the press: "The first two groups were fairly close together. You could see them at the same time. the third group appeared two minutes later. Some of the objects were lined up in single file. Others moved in clusters. Still others travelled in a loose 'V' formation." ' (FSRWRUFO)

June 18th, 1957: At about 8pm, two brightly lit objects were first spotted in the sky, off the port beam of a Matson freighter - the Hawaiian Fisherman - that was then about 150 miles off San Francisco. The sighting was later reported by Ray Melton, who, along with Virge Dixon, the second cook, first saw them. About 15 minutes after the pair sighted the two UFOs, a third object also appeared - the three of them were like small moons, giving off a cold white unchanging light, and they appeared to pace the freighter for a while, moving off slowly, in a V formation. 'The skipper of the ship, Captain C.G.Wertz, told crew members he had never seen anything of that nature in all his seagoing experience.' (UFOWhS)

March 18th, 1958: 'A former sceptic, Dr.Leonard tells of the chain of events that first aroused his interest in flying saucers. All doubts about their existence vanished when he made his first sighting. he writes: "On March 18, 1958, at about 8:45 P.M. in my own backyard... I saw five flying saucers. They were directly overhead, flying in a V-formation, and were moving very slowly due east. They appeared as small moons about half the size of the full moon when viewed with the naked eye, and yellow-white in color. They made no noise. There were no vapor trails, and they appeared to be perfectly round. They did not shine as a light (such as a star), but seemed to have an overall glow, and a clearly defined outline. The sky was dark and there were no clouds. I watched them for a few seconds as they drifted overhead; then they began to increase in speed. Their acceleration was so smooth as to be all but imperceptible until they were literally flashing across the sky. they passed between me and the Big Dipper and disappeared at high speed." Sighting resembled the "Lubbock Lights" (Texas, 1951) except that the V flew on edge, point forward. The lights moved in unison; two witnesses reported the sighting as "a solid V-shaped object with body lights."' (UFOInv II-1)

July 22nd, 1963: Woburn, Massachusetts, USA.
'Many New Englanders watched a spectacular sun eclipse on July 20 but perhaps the greatest thrill came to a large number of Woburn children, who watched a "V" formation of five yellowish-white oval-shaped saucers in flight on July 22 at around 3 p.m.
Mike Hennessy, David Casella, Jim Trider, Jim Culhane, Ann and Maureen Henderson, Bob Connolly, Rick Callan, Sharon and Dennis McMichael and Glenn Goddard were among the crowd of youngsters who viewed the phenomena from Grace Road, West Woburn.
The strange unknown flying objects, flying at speeds faster than jets, as they passed overhead, made a strange whirring or whistling sound and maneuvered in the skies only a matter of seconds, but left a group of excited and puzzled youngsters.
Mike Hennessy, 13, of 7 Menchin Drive and James Trider, 14, of 28 Rich Road said the UFOs looked like the often described 'flying saucers' reported worldwide many times before...'

July 27th, 1963: 'Commandant Zirone told the newspapermen of an interesting earlier sighting.. at 6.50 p.m.. when he was commanding the Gendarmerie detachment at Bernardo de Irogoyen, he and the Chief of Police, Commandante Jose Chiachio, and the Deputy-Chief, Senor Linka, had seen seven oval luminous UFOs flying in a perfect "V" formation on a West-East course in the direction of Brazil. The objects, moving at great speed and altitude, gave off many-coloured flashes of light, and as they passed beneath the cloud cover they lit up the clouds with their varied colours. The authorities at Eldorado, 170 kilometres distant, later reported that the formation had passed over there. The paper quotes this as being one of the rare occasions on which a high officer of the Argentine National Forces has spoken openly about the UFOs, and notes that what had impressed Commandant Zirone most of all was this extraordinary display of colours.' (Creighton, FSR 11-6)

September 17th, 1963: Perpignan, France; 10.30pm. A town administrator and his wife observed ten very fast-moving aerial objects at an estmated altitude of 2,000 metres -
'..Mme. Verges went out on to the terrace and, lifting her eyes to the sky, saw the objects which were proceeding in a line and oscillating. She immediately called her husband who fetched his binoculars and saw that the objects.. (were) one moment.. in a line which appeared to be heading in the direction of Boulou, the next they seemed to be making for Prades in a vertical formation after having flown over the boulevard Clemenceau in a "V" formation.
M. Verges, whom it is impossible to doubt.. states that when viewed through binoculars, these objects, which could only be called flying saucers, possessed an ellipsoid shape and were about 30cm. in length.. (He) says that the 'unknowns' could not have been aircraft, nor birds nor weather balloons. There was no noise, no lights, and no smoke.. The objects.. were of a grey colour and metallic.' October 28th, 1963: Florence, Italy; 7.12pm approx. Hundreds of people witnessed a v-shaped formation of five glowing globes in the sky. (R.Pinotti, FS 1.1966)

November 23rd, 1963: USS Kearsage, out of Japan. At 6pm, two witnesses observed formation, from the flight deck of a ship - '...(We saw) five lights in an inverted "V" rise from the horizon, hover for a few minutes and then sink back down below the horizon. We were at sea on our way back to the U.S. from Japan. Lights were similar to the Phoenix "V" lights...' (NUFORC)

January 30th, 1964:

This next photograph, taken by contactee Bob Renaud, at about 1.00 A.M.,
featured on the back page of UFO International Issue No.21.

"I was observing the stars at the time the formation of three ships came into view from the north, apparently quite low, and travelling slowly in the pattern shown in the photo, until they reached directly overhead. Then they stopped just long enough for me to take one shot before they accelerated straight up and were out of sight in a little under three seconds."

"On the morning of February 29th, my Korendian space friends called me, via radio, and told me to have my camera ready that evening, a little after sunset, and to go out at about 6:00 P.M. with it. I did so, and a minute later four discs streaked in from the south in the familiar check-mark formation (photo below). I was able to snap a couple of shots before they flashed upward and were lost to view."

May 1st, 1964: 9 miles from Richmond, South Africa - 'For three successive nights, Mrs.Ken Marwick, of Mona Glen farm.. has seen a mysterious formation of 'stars' over the farm. She said that on the first night two bright objects, close together with a bright crescent, were visible in the night sky for about 45 minutes until they were lost to sight behind a hill. The light was so bright that it dazzled the eyes. The phenomenon occurred again on Thursday night.. and last night.. although last night there were three bright objects in the sky in a triangular formation. Friends of Mrs.Marwick came specially from Richmond last night to witness the strange sight, and were at a loss to explain the occurrence.'

January 13th, 1965: Tasman Sea, off New Zealand coast - 'Flying objects on Radar. Seven unidentified objects were picked up on radar over the Tasman at 8.50 last night by an aircraft making a regular crossing. The objects were flying in an easterly direction, in a V formation, at about 45,000 feet.
A Civil Aviation Department official has confirmed the sighting. "We have recorded them as unidentified flying objects," he said. / It was possible, he added, that the objects were cloud formations caused by high winds at considerable altitude.' (NZ Herald/FSR 11-2)

c.January 19th, 1965: Dunedin, New Zealand - 'Twelve orange-coloured objects were seen by a court officer of the Magistrate's Court. The objects were in a V-formation, flying low in a northern direction.' (MHervey)

August 6th, 1965: Houghton, Michigan, U.S.A. - Personnel at the U.S.Air Force Radar Base in the Keweenaw Peninsula reported solid radar contact with up to ten unidentified flying objects moving in V-formation over Lake Superior. The radar men said that the objects were at an altitude of between 5,200 and 17,00 feet, and moving at about 9,000 miles an hour.

October 14th, 1965: 'Dear Sir: On October 14 at 7:23 P.M., my wife and I, as well as an amateur photographer who was standing near us, saw a series of flying objects over New York under the worst possible conditions - namely, while walking out of the World's Fair. / Let me give you a description for all its worth: They were a total of about 12 elliptical whitish objects which sped in a northerly direction in a quickly changing V formation at 7:24 P.M. when they were 12 in number, returned once more at 7:30 P.M. in an irregular formation, one of them detaching itself in another crazy motion. / The temperature was about 55-60 degrees, the wind-speed on the ground about 10 miles/hour. / It is the third time that I have seen similar motion, and it is certainly quite possible to achieve that kind of seemingly erratic flight with objects manufactured on earth, and if indeed our observations are correct, the possiblities in terms of speed and acceleration could be or are fantastic. / I would be interested to hear if any other reports of this occurrence have reached you. / Sincerely yours S.G.' November 26th, 1965: Phoenix, Arizona, USA. For report to FBI made by William Rhodes of a changing formation sighted by himself, his wife and her son, which includes the V within V formation as part of witnessed manoeuvres (see July 26th 1972) - Click Here.

February 27th, 1966: Valparaiso, Chile. 'UFOs were observed at daybreak today in the port of Valparaiso and in the districts of Villa Alemana and Limacha within the city. The objects, which are said to have flown to the number of five and in V-formation, were seen at 0.30 to 0.40, 1.30 and 1.40 hours. They were described as circular structures from which a "cupola" struck out. They were discharging beams of light on the upper part...' (Boletin Informativo De Diovni/BJ 2-2)

March 17th, 1966: Portland, Dorset, UK. 'There were more than a dozen witnesses of this incident, which happened on the Chesil Beach.. Over the West Bay, roughly SSW, a group of three round, bright, orange-coloured objects hung suspended in the sky. The formation was spaced in a triangular formation and was visible for about 15 minutes. No sounds were heard. Eventually, the two orange lights forming the base of the triangle moved slowly towards the light at the apex and merged with it, after which this remaining light all at once disappeared.
At about the same time the orange lights were observed, a Sea Vixen aircraft crashed in the sea off Portland Bill and the body of the pilot was later recovered.' (BJ 1-9)

June 1st, 1966: Athens. At 8pm, a father and son, and others, saw 'three points of light flying formation, demonstrating control of inertia and momentum.. They met to form a perfect equilateral triangle..' (NUFORC)

June 18th, 1966: Gulf of St.Florent, Corsica. At 4am, a fisherman named Volelli, observed, flying above the saddle of the Col de Teghime mountains, a triangular formation of three aluminium coloured discs. The discs travelled at the speed of a jet aircraft, and kept changing their places in the formation. Volelli alerted his companion Scotto, and as this man also began to watch, the three discs changed course, heading towards the two fishermen. They both threw themselves down onto the floor of their boat and uttered 'a prayer to the Madonna to save them.' Their next observation revealed that the perceived danger had passed, as the formation was now heading in another direction.

August 4th, 1966: Michigan, USA - 'United Press International, in a dispatch out of Houghton.. reported an Air Force radar base on the Keweenaw Peninsula had tracked seven to ten unidentified objects travelling in V-formation over Lake Superior. Moving out of the southwest, the UFOs were flying north-northwest at 9,000 miles per hour at an altitude of between 5,200 and 17,000 feet. Three other bases - in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Canada - also detected the machines with radar, and at the first site over Duluth, jet interceptors chased them but were easily outdistanced.' October 22nd, 1967: At about 6.20 p.m., five orange-coloured rings in close "V" formation were seen for about 30 seconds, over Taunton, Somerset (England). The sky was dark and clear, and the speed of the soundless objects was described as terrific. (Lloyd, FSR 14-2)

October 25th, 1967: Retired RAF Wing Commander Eric Cox of Hyde viewed 'seven brilliant lights in the sky, while at night through Hampshire: "They were three miles away at treetop height, flying in a V-formation. After about three minutes, they broke off and three went away. They just faded. Then the other four formed a perfect formation - just like a plus sign or a cross. They were certainly under some sort of control because the formation was so tight." (A Covert Agenda)

Spring 1968: While walking home from Semback AFB in Germany, where his father was stationed, 14 year-old Orbie Frakes noticed something in the clear sky that was reflecting the sun. He turned and looked back to see 5 highly polished metal spheres overhead: '..They appeared to be about 6 to 8 inches in diameter, about 75 feet from my position, and flying at an altitude of approximately 50 feet. They made no sound and traveled at about 20 miles per hour against a slight breeze. They flew in a perfect V-formation without varying an inch before finally fading and disappearing out of sight...'
(UFORep, Summer '75)

September 24th, 1968: 'Shortly after 8 p.m. 12 people saw 10 luminous objects flying at great speed over the vicinity of Gibralfaro Castel, near Malaga, southern Spain. / The objects were in two groups, one of six, and the other of three. The tenth 'saucer' flew independently and appeared to be the leader. They were in view for several minutes before vanishing. All showed the familiar pattern of changing colous, red, green, white. All were emitting flashes of light as though communicating. / The leader, in front, emitted far brighter flashes than the rest. The formation of the six was a straight line, while the second group were flying in a precise triangle, and on the right of the line.' (FSR 14-6)

October 7th or 8th, 1968: Slough, England. Peter Harding - '..I saw approximately a dozen lights flying in perfect symmetry in a 'V' formation from west to east. This must have been witnessedby hundreds, if not thousands, of people...' (UFO, Oct.2001)

November 29th, 1968: vicinity of Mangamahu, Wanganui, New Zealand; 4.10am. '..(A) commercial pilot Alan Harding and a passenger, Ramon G.Peddie.. saw three large, round, bright, pulsating UFOs in a triangular formation flying across the front of their aircraft toward the west.
"As we flew close to them they split formation and headed inland.. at high speed," Peddie stated."
The objects crossed to a "big ridge."
"Then one descended below hill-top level, appearing to land," the pilot said.
the other two UFOs hovered above the hills. Then the objects "regrouped and disappeared."'

February-April 1969: near RAF Fairford, Wiltshire, England. 'A family felt the air become electrified as the engine and lights of their car went out. Their dog became quite excited. They then saw three disc-shaped metallic bodies moving in a V-formation high overhead. The car could be restarted after the discs had disappeared.' (M.Rodeghier UFO Reports Involving Vehicle Interference)

May 23rd, 1969: Rumania; sighting by Ion Neagu, an engineer & his friend - 'At about 21:55 I noticed at an angle of 40 degrees to the horizon a formation of five illuminated objects travelling at great speed. They were considerably larger than jet aircraft. I was in the Brasov park when the five came right over me and headed north-east. The objects were almost round - a typical feature - and seemed to have a diameter of about half that of the full moon. One of them flew ahead, the others following in V-formation. they shone brightly, like neon lights, and the sky was partly overcast by thin cloud which of course prevented the objects from gleaming as strongly as when they were crossing clear sections. It was noteworthy that after they had passed me two of them did not appear to keep the same distance fom the others as previously, but started a zigzag movement. The paths of these two sometimes crossed and their zigzagging speed was not in accordance with the known laws of inertia and not related to the velocity of the others.'
(UFOs From Behind The Iron Curtain)

October 5th, 1969: Mr.Brian Slade, F.R.A.S. of Kent, England, reported -
'At 9.43 p.m... I observed with the naked eye, directly over Greenhithe, some seven to ten vague fluorescent discs flying in V-formation very rapidly from North to South. I heard no sound. At least six of them maintained the basic V-formation, while one or two discs at the rear section of the fork of the V were behaving in an erratic fashion, darting to and fro across the rear of the 'V.'
The movement of the discs was not unlike the behaviour of birds, except for their speed, their shape, and their fluorescence. the light emitted by them was similar to the glow observed in a thermionic valve when over-run or letting in air.
The one or two erratic discs at the rear were like sparks from a bonfire as they fluttered
around the back of the V-formation.
It was a very extraordinary sight, quite unlike anything that I had ever seen previously, and I should be extremely interested to know whether any other witnesses saw them.
The total duration of the sighting I estimate at 15-20 seconds. I had an 8 in. reflector telescope readily available, but the movement of the objects was far too rapid for me even to have contemplated using it..
I would say, at a guess, that the height of the discs was no more than 300-400 ft.
Asking myself whether I might have been tricked by the image-retaining properties of the human eye, I have tried since to reproduce the conditions in every detail, but bo repetition of the sighting resulted, or anything anywhere like it. My feelings at the time were of an unbelievable dream-like sensation. There was also the strange feeling that I was only able to see what I was seeing because of a mistake on the part of someone.' October 9th, 1969: 'An unidentifiable luminous formation was sighted Thursday night as it made two passes over the Denver, Colorado area. The third such sighting in as many nights, the formation, travelling soundlessly on a north to south course, consisted of a loose V shape with ten to 12 lights on each arm of the shape. The mysterious object was first spotted at 8pm and later at 8.15pm. On the last pass, the formation was followed at a distance by what appeared to be jet aircraft. A check with officials at Stapleton International Airport disclosed no unusual actovity reported in the area of the sighting at the time stated. Again, due to the speed and low intensity of the object's lights, the camera was unable to record the event. A plausible explanation of the phenomena was offered by an authority on UFOs who said the formation's shape and behaviour was similar to what has become known as the Lubbock Lights, a UFO first sighted in Lubbock, Texas on August 25, 1951 and observed many times since.' (UFO Chronicle 5)

1970: Joseph Foster, referring to the crew of the US Coast Guard Cutter Mellon: 'Our crew also had other UFO sightings. During our July, we were on Ocean Station Victor Patrol, when we had radar contact with three targets traveling at speeds in excess of 3000 mph halfway between Midway Island and Japan. Eight crewmen saw three white lights traveling southwest in a 'v' formation. A sitrep report was filed...' (FF#5-2000)

January 1st, 1972: 'Aircraft captain Oddmund Karlsen saw them. people in the control tower at Bergen saw them. Passengers on Karlsen's plane saw them. Hundreds of people on their way home from the New Year's Eve celebrations saw them over the whole of South Norway. Reports came from Eidsvoll, Bergen, Moss, Oslo, Kristiansand, and many other places. The Ministry of Defence also received a mass of reports about them. About what? About the UFOs - Unidentified Flying Objects - which crossed southern Norway between 04.15 and 04.30 on New Year's Day. No one knows what they are or where they come from. Are they from Earth, or are they objects from the universe?
Aircraft captain Oddmund Karlsen of Braathens SAFE is certainly the man who was nearest to them that night - about 10,000 feet nearer than the people on the ground.
"I was on the way from Las Palmas to Bergen with 134 passengers. Just before the approach to Bergen I noticed them. I saw seven illuminated objects. Three of them were brighter than the rest, an intensely white light. For a moment I thought that they were jet fighters, but shortly afterwards I realised that I was wrong. These objects went much higher, between 70,000 and 100,000 feet above the ground, about the same height at which the well-known U2 planes fly. these were not planes - a plane gives out a contrail. The objects flew in a vee formation. They maintained a high speed, about twice the speed of sound. Six flew in the front and one in the rear... I could not see anything other than the light - they appeared to be round objects... I do not know of any explanation..."
...A MOD spokesman stated: "It was no known military object; for the time being we have no explanation for the phenomenon.. We have received twenty reports.. There are agreements in the reports which are quite striking. The total number of UFOs, the times, shape and colours agree completely, although the reports come from places all over South Norway.." '

July 26th, 1972: 'Mrs. An'Augusta Rodrigues lived in Atafona.. in the State of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). She was being driven back to Barcelos.. where her husband was the manager of a large sugar refinery.. She was admiring the beautiful colours of the sunset - it was 5:30 p.m. - pointing out the golden-pink sky to her 15-year-old niece and the driver.. when she noticed a spot in the sky.. three or four more spots appeared.. one of them larger. Then many of these rounded black spots appeared, from different parts of the sky, silhouetting darkly against the sun's last rays. They all grouped together forming a large black patch. Suddenly this swept upwards and turned into the formation of a large V with another V inserted... [Irene Granchi here adds this footnote - 'At this point I am reminded of the famous abduction case of Antonio Nelson Tasca (1983) during which his back was marked with a double V, as the above sighting describes. In Tasca's case he was given a message for mankind by Cababa, the Commander of the UFO, who claimed to come from Agali, an underwater reign. A fisherman from Crab Island.. found his back marked in the same manner. Could these marks be a symbol indicating the origin of these captors? Or could they just be a brand-mark for these ETs to recognise their human captives?' To these curious links, can now be added the fact that there had been at least one earlier sighting of a V formation with another V formation within it - this was a Canadian report from among sightings of April 1952 documented by Desmond Leslie in 'Flying Saucers Have Landed' - see the above-listed case from April 24th, 1952! Another two found - see November 26th 1965 and September 10th 1972. Along with the Carl Hart 1951 photo case, that makes five known cases of this possibly very significant formation-type] ...The V-formations of objects were perfectly still, then '..after a while, the shape changed again and became a black patch...(etc.)'

August 9th, 1972: Warminster, Wiltshire, UK; 11.10am. Sighting here.

August 11th, 1972: Warminster, Wiltshire, UK; 2am. Sighting here.

September 10th, 1972: West of Georges Creek, New South Wales, Australia; 12.45pm. Mr.Allan James, a greengrocer who regularly made trips between Kempsey and Armidale, was driving towards Armidale, at 4.30 a.m - '.. Behind trees about 30 yards from the road he saw a strange purple glow. He slowed down and rolled down his window, but could not hear any noise.. the object appeared to be emitting a ray of bright light, similar to a beam from a lighthouse.. lighting up sections of the road..'
Later that day, he was checking a load on his truck, before descending from Big Hill, when he noticed a long, cigar-shaped craft - 'It was 100 times bigger than a Boeing 707 and from each end came small objects - flying saucers - which grouped into an arrowhead formation (illustration below) before heading south-east. Mr.James said the small objects left the mother ship like fighters leaving an aircraft carrier. Once the flying saucers were out of sight, the large craft climbed at such speed that it had disappeared in seconds.. The incident occurred in broad daylight and Mr.James had the craft in sight for at least ten minutes. He estimated the mothership was several thousand feet above the ground when the smaller objects were leaving.'

November 1972: At 10pm, three small, round, extremely bright white objects flickered, as they flew in loose V formation over Reykavic, Iceland. (PrD)

December 12th, 1972: Basildon, Essex, UK; 6.15pm. 'Mr.T.W.Norris, a 48-year-old government officer, was standing outside his garage.. It was a cold evening, but the sky was clear and bright..'
After about 30 seconds, he turned slightly '..and was surprised to see three large very bright, orange objects suspended in the sky almost overhead. He watched for about 10 to 12 seconds while they moved away.. at very high speed. / There was no noise.. and he described them as arrowhead or boomerang shaped, having sharply defined leading edges but blurred trailing edges. Compared to the stars, he said, the objects were 50 times larger, and they moved in V-formation, the centre one leading...' (BJ 3-9)

circa-1972: Morden, UK. A large number of witnesses saw a group of circular UFOs in V-formation. The objects first hovered, then left extremely fast.

March 23rd, 1973: Many ground witnesses saw seven objects in rigid V formation over Belfast, Pennsylvania, USA. (PrD)

October 7th, 1973: USA - 'Four young men (two of whom were airmen at England AFB in Alexandria, Louisiana) had an encounter on 7 October 1973. They had gone on a 35 mile round trip by bicycle to Hot Wells along rural roads and stopped for a beer on their way home. Time was around 20.00 on starry night. They then observed "an armada of at least a hundred or more UFOs flying extremely high up". These moved east and were in a 'flock' formation with an 'v' at the front and took several minutes to cross the sky. They decided not to report for fear of ridicule.. Whilst the witness who told me of this feels it was very strange I have a suspicion this was a formation of birds with reflective underbellies having 'come south' for the winter.' (NUFON 146)

October 18th, 1973: Luton, UK; midnight. Six brilliant white lights floated downwards above Luton - '..They descended to the height of a plane approaching from London, then arranged themselves into a V-formation and changed colour to orange, apparently either rotating or pulsating. Then, giving off an eerie glow, they disappeared over the rooftops...' (J.Cowley/BJ 4-1)

November 9th, 1973: Nine to eleven objects flew over Mobile, Alabama, USA, in V formation. (PrD)

Pre-1974: U.S.A.[?] '..Sheila remembers seeing her first UFO when she was only seven-years-old. Sheila and her cousin were out on a farm one evening staring into the clear night sky when they witnessed three objects forming a triangle.
The objects were circular in shape, and one of them was larger than the others. The round forms darted about, always maintaining the same distance from each other.
Just as suddenly as the objects appeared, they vanished from view. Both girls looked at each other in wonder and said, "Did you see that?"
The two of them laughed it off, but told no one about the incident...'

circa-end of October 1975: Belfast, Northern Ireland - 'At the weekend, five UFOs were sighted over Belfast flying in a 'V' formation across the city.' (FSR 21-5)

November 23rd, 1975: Michigan, USA - 'Couple sighted UFOs Near Airport. A Benton Harbor couple late yesterday became the second and third persons to report seeing unidentified objects in the sky near Benton Harbor.. Mrs.William Peterson said she and her husband were traveling south-west on Red Arrow Highway somewhere between 5 and 5:30pm when her husband told her to look at three things in the air. Mrs. Peterson said the three objects were a brilliant gold in color, resembled a small cigar or pencil in shape and seemed to drift along in a v-shape.' (Mundo Monitor 3-76)

March 10th, 1977: New York, USA; about 10pm. A group of students from Ulster County Academy, saw five red-orange objects pass about 300 feet overhead in V-formation making a loud "vibrating noise." (Info Journal 23)

October 18th, 1977: Stonehenge, Wiltshire, UK; after 6.20pm. The six witnesses - Mr. and Mrs.John Flattley and their daughter, and Mr. and Mrs.Terry Hayes and their daughter - were camping for a few days at Stonehenge. On this evening, they were clearing away after the evening meal and tending to a camp fire, when an orange light was noticed in the sky - it disappeared within seconds. John Flattley had brought a camera along, intending to make '..a short documentary film about the monument and its mystique,' and when they sighted another puzzling light in the sky he began to film, capturing it for a second or two before it went.
Every few minutes after that, the group would observe the appearance of another of the lights, which were later described as '..golden spheres with a slightly diffuse edge.' They estimated that about 15 to 18 were seen over a period of three hours. Generally, they either were seen to meander towards the group before "melting away," or suddenly appeared from nowhere remaining stationary before "extinguishing." The lights mostly showed themselves in clusters, numbering between 2 and 7-8. One of these was seen in a 'V' formation and '..was filmed but the film reel ran out before the formation was completed.' In all about three minutes of the lights' presence was filmed.

Lights lining up into a V-formation (cropped scan from b/w reproduction of still from Kodachrome 40 film reel).

The film was '..examined at length by analysts for the Kodak Company at their Hemel Hempstead laboratories.. They excluded chemical faults and processing defects of any kind. They are also confident that the images preclude trickery of any type. They considered several possibilities of this but found no evidence whatsoever... Their final considered opinion was that the film is genuine, the coloration is very close to what it really was, and it shows a sequence of lighted objects that were actually present in the sky at the time the film was taken - the nature unknown...'

February 5th, 1978: Klamath Falls, Oregon, USA. A corporate pilot witnessed a 'V-Formation of 10 bright lights' that paced his plane, climbed and then sped away. (MUFOJ, 3-83)

May 4th-7th, 1978: San Luis, Argentina. '..(AFP). It has been revealed here today that a squadron of some forty flying saucers, in perfect formation, has passed several times to and fro across the air-space of this province of Argentina, which lies some 400 kilometres to the west of Buenos Aires.

According to reports received by the local newspaper, La Voz del Sud, and by their regional correspondents, the first sighting of these UFOs took place during the night of last thursday. / The eyewitnesses say the weird craft passed overhead bathed in a tremendous greenish-blue glow. / The craft were in V-formation, and in the course of several of the fly overs the formation split up into two sections which, so the dumbfounded witnesses say, then came together to form the V-pattern again after executing perfect curves.' (Creighton, FSR 24-3)

August 9th, 1978: Macao -
'More than ten students of Peitao Middle School saw an unidentified flying object at
Lu-huan-hei-sha.. According to them.. at 10:00 p.m. or so a student went to the beach. When he looked up casually, he saw an object as big as a fist flying in the sky above Yapoyang, dazzling with very strong light. He at once asked his schoolmasters to watch with them. That shining object soon split in two, one of which then emitted three smaller red light spots in equilateral traiangle formation. the formerly bright orange object became a smaller silver light spot and moved with the other three beside it. Suddenly they stopped, but then moved again towards the land from above the sea. A few minutes later, their light weakened and finally disappeared.
The other orange object which remained at its former place went through the same process described above. It emitted three red light spots in triangle formation, moved slowly, got weaker gradually and disappeared at last above Yapoyang.
This unidentified flying object showed for 15 minutes altogether.' (UOMCh)

About an hour earlier '..five middle school girl students on the fifth floor of Li-hsiang Building on New St. of Ho-bien saw two bright round flying objects, shining red in the sky above Quay Nanguan. The two UFOs were two meters away from each other, followed by an orange object whose shape and size were like those of a car light. the three sparkling objects flew southwest to Island Hsiao-chin in equilateral formation. They appeared for 30 seconds altogether.' (UOMCh)

September 6th, 1978: South Yofra & Palmar districts, Cordoba, Argentina. At about 5am, multiple witnesses saw '..a luminous object giving off blue and red flashes and moving from east to west and back. As the UFO appeared, all the electrical power in the area went out. The UFO joined up with two or three others and the group flew off in "V" formation.' (A.Evans, UFORep, 9.1979)

April 1979: Talisay, The Philippines. 'REBELS FROM SPACE? Phillipines President Marcos may think he has enough troubles now, but his military advisers apparently think there is a new menace to his regime - multi-colored UFO's. The nation's military forces, which have been busy grappling with moslem insurgents and other guerillas, have been dispatched to investigate the reported landing of a fleet of extraterrestrial vehicles. Police and motorists in the central province of Negros Occidental had reported seeing "A Mother Ship which later spewed out smaller UFOs into a vee formation" over the town of Talisay. / It was the first reported landing of UFOs in the Philippines, although many have been reported flying over the country in recent weeks.'
(Detroit Free Press/MM 5-79)

'Meanwhile, back in Talisay, motorists at first saw one UFO hovering over the sugar mill. At 4.20 a.m. the policemen came out of the headquarters and saw it too. Eyewitnesses described how they saw a flame at the "belly" of the object, which then changed position to the sides. Later the disc-shaped object began pulsating in various colours and releasing identical, but smaller, UFOs which formed into a V-formation and flew off at high speed towards Mt.Silay, led by the "mothership." A landing was later reported somewhere in theCarapale Valley.' (A.Jamaludin, FSR 25-6)

September 6th, 1980: near Avebury, Wiltshire, UK; 9.15pm. '..We had taken a long, gruelling ride down south on our motorcycle, for the purpose of visiting the Farnborough Air Show. At 9.15pm, returning through the dark along the M4 motorway, we suddenly saw a spectacular aerial display. It consisted of three lights, bright white in colour, which burst into existence one after the other, and then lined themselves up into a triangular formation hovering above a distant hilltop. As we drove on past, one light winked out leaving two side by side in the night.. it was only when we later consulted a map that we realised that we had been close by, and looking in the direction of, the mysterious Avebury circle in Wiltshire. Flares? UFO? We do not know.'

July 27th, 1981: Zibo, Shandong Province, China - 'At 15.30.. Police Officer Shi Wenglu was watching television when he heard a noise. He ran outside in the yard to check on his TV antenna, and it was then that he spotted 3 round luminous objects flying in a triangular formation in the sky. They were flying from northeast to southwest. A moment later he sighted 2 more luminous spheres flying from north to south, and finally turning toward the west. He also discovered several other round objects that remained motionless in the sky, making a total of 13 to 15 objects above. Later the intruders all disappeared at once.' (UOMCh)

'..Felipe and Pablo Orrego went to one of the piers of Hoboken, NJ, to take photos of the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson River for the AV (Audio-Visual) show. Felipe.. was using a Nikon F-2 camera with Ektachrome film for color slides. Neither he nor Pablo saw lights or anything unusual in the sky, but after the film was developed by Marsden, Felipe discovered that one of the Panoramic shots of Manhattan with the Empire State Building on the extreme left, showed three lights in the sky in a seeming formation (see below), located to the left of the center of the photo...' June 20th & 21st, 1985: '..during the night..and the early morning..It was almost midnight when 8 to 12 bright, reddish-orange lights with contrails following behind, moved in V-formation from the NW. to the SW. / The objects moved very fast across the sky and were in view for only seconds..' Many witnesses; possibly broken up parts of Russian Satellite Cosmos 1530 (but would they travel in V-formation?) (Gordon/MUFOJ212)

December 31st, 1986: Near Mt.Airy, North Carolina, USA; 7pm. Two 19-year-old friends - 'We were driving south on Hwy.52 when we saw 3 white lights in a triangular shape ascend from the trees to the left of the highway and hover momentarily before "swirling" out of sight... At the rate the lights accelerated, it left us in a total state of shock...' (NUFORC)

pre-October 1988: near Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA. '..Approximately one month later, my older brother and I went outside to look for falling stars, the best spot to see from was laying in the middle of the orad. It was half an hour before we saw anything then we saw lights moving across the sky, very high up, that looked like they were in outer space. We saw more lights coming from the other side of the sky in a V formation. When the lights got to what looked like a football fields length to us, some of the lights started going out. When the lights on one side were out, the remaining lights moved together in the same direction they came from, and then a larger and brighter light came up, the little lights moving into it. After all lights were gone, the big one went straight up and out of sight in less than 5 seconds. The whole thing took around five minutes. We stayed outside for a while longer and did indeed see a falling star...'

February 8th, 1990: Twentynine Palms, California, USA; 6.20-7.40am. '..I couldn't believe my eyes as we stood watching the three craft approach.. Estimates of the size of the three ships range from at least the size of a football field to the size of a shopping mall and larger. The biggest craft, snugly nestled between the other two, cast a shadow that covered the base at mainside. This ship sported a massive dome structure.. The first craft resembled a battle cruiser that had escaped from a Star Wars movie.. the smallest of the trio appeared to act as a shuttle. Roughly one third the size of the others.. Shaped like a giant floating cigar, the battleship grey metal of the little craft shone brightly against the sun...
Looking out the living room window, I saw the same three craft hung motionless in the sky forming an equilaterial triangle...' (Anna Ciborowski, UFOUn, 6/7.1991)

They were in a wide range of mixed sexes.. Contact International.. interviewed 5 witnesses on February 4th. The combined descriptions of the event indicate 30-70 star like objects moving in formations or individually.. from E to W over the centre of Cheltenham.. at high altitiude and totally silent. One grouping was of 5+ objects moving as straight line formation and another set in a 'V' formation (see illustration below).

Conditions were clear.. It was certain that the objects were not aircraft or shooting stars, and one witness stated she felt privileged to have experienced something of great significance. All agreed they had not seen anything similar before. The witnesses were inspired by what they had seen and had no fear...' (Aw 19-3)
